Home » The Spring 2009 Splendid Review
April 1, 2009 – Texas Children’s Hospital
The Splendid Review celebrates young authors at Texas Children’s Cancer Center. The anthology began in 1999 when Writers in the Schools (WITS) published the first edition. For the last decade, several anthologies a year have been released to much acclaim. In 2005, The Periwinkle Foundation adopted this program. They now bring WITS writer Marcia Chamberlain into the Cancer Center once a week to provide writing workshops for patients and their siblings.
Inspired by art and supported by a professional writer the children write stories, poems, songs and even comic strips. Their best work is published in a beautiful print anthology, which is produced and mailed to them free-of-charge by The Periwinkle Foundation. Jessica, Age 13, sums up the power of creative writing, “words open up the door of hope.” Her poem “A New Picture” will be in the next Splendid Review.
The Periwinkle Foundation develops and provides programs that positively change the lives of children, young adults and families who are challenged by cancer and other life threatening illnesses and are cared for at Texas Children’s Hospital.
Each year more than 4,000 children are touched by Periwinkle programs Camp Periwinkle, Camp YOLO, Family Camp, the Long Term Survivor Program and the Arts & Creative Writing Program which culminates each year in a traveling exhibition of art by children touched by cancer and blood disorders. Through camping, recreational and arts programming, The Periwinkle Foundation provides opportunities for these special children and their families to heal emotionally, lead fuller lives and become stronger survivors. With the generous help of our friends and supporters in the community, The Periwinkle Foundation changes lives for life. Learn more at www.periwinklefoundation.org.
