“Good morning, everyone. I wanted to welcome you to this really wonderful occasion which is the dedication of the Faris D. Virani Ewing Sarcoma Center. It’s a unique center. Its aimed at research and improving treatments for a disease that is the second most common bone tumor in childhood and one that is relatively difficult to treat—and that is Ewing Sarcoma. And this is a unique center in that it is the only one in the United States that has been dedicated primarily to research and innovation in therapeutics for this disease. With your help and your support, we are developing something, we’re embarking on something that is truly, truly special. ,” said Dr. David Poplack, Director of the Texas Children’s Cancer Center.
“This is going to be how we are going to serve as a family. This is how we are going to do what we can to help move the agenda forward,” said Farid Virani.
“We are really very excited about establishing the Center and we really think that with your efforts and really your faith in us, we are really honored and proud to be establishing the Faris D. Virani Ewing Sarcoma Center.” said Dr. Jason Yustein, Director of the Faris D. Virani Ewing Sarcoma Center.
“Our mission is to create a state-of-the-art research facility where we are conducting and performing modern, up-to-date research in clinical, translational and basic science research. We think the advancements that we make here will not only touch the lives of those here Texas Children’s, but all over the country and around the world,” said Yustein.
“I have to say, Faris, with his own savings in his little piggy bank that we’ve been teaching him to save, spend, donate and invest—who would have known that the donate and invest would be at this moment in time (cutting the ribbon). If you’ve been wondering why Faris has a golden ribbon—I wanted to make sure it wasn’t yellow, it was golden – because this is truly a golden moment in the lives not just of our family, but we think we’re going to be very bold in our thinking and we think it’s a golden moment for pediatric cancer in general. We have a book at home from a very wise, very brilliant, totally radical thinker, and that’s Faris. Over the past year this totally radical thinker, also very poetic, has said so many things to us and we’ve been journaling it. So, we took out his book and as a family we found a quote that he told us–this was at the very beginning of our journey when it was a time of despair and a lot of uncertainty. Faris looked at me in the eye and he said, ‘Mommy, cancer is not hard’ and that sublime thought, that transcendent thought, that original thought shifted our consciousness completely. It was so transcendent that I think that we broke all the indoctrination, all the fear and we went through this journey with his phrase, ‘cancer is not hard’. Perhaps it’s the thinking it’s the expansive thinking, it’s the thinking without boundaries, without indoctrination, without fear. So, we present this gift to you so that your team can work in this space fearlessly and we always pray that grace, amazing grace, guides you in your search. You are a family, our family of the heart. You have carried us with love and your prayers and we are at this moment in time because of you all. Thank you so much!” said Dr. Asha Virani.
