October 14, 2011 – McAllen, TX
Hyundai Hope on Wheels and it’s local dealers awarded the Vannie E. Cook Jr. Children’s Cancer and Hematology Clinic a $100,000 Hope Grant on September 29th, 2011. The special day was also proclaimed “Hope on Wheels Day” in the City of McAllen, TX by Mayor Richard Cortez, who spoke on behalf of the City at the check presentation.
On the same special day, the Lourdes (Lulu) Reyna family displayed a van with her image that will be used by volunteers at the Lourdes D. Lifeline Foundation to help transport children with cancer and their families to medical appointments.
Although Lulu lost her battle with cancer, her family continues to help other local children who are fighting the disease.
“It’s my pleasure to welcome all of you to the Hope on Wheels grant ceremony at the clinic. Some of you were here last month when we received a $40,000 Scholars Grant for Passport for Care. Now we are very honored and humbled to receive a second grant during Childhood Cancer Awareness Month from Hyundai. It’s an increased grant for an additional $100,000. Today the Vannie Cook Children’s Cancer and Hematology Clinic will be recognized as a leading pediatric cancer facility in the country, one of only 71 to receive this $100,000 Hope Grant from Hyundai Hope on Wheels and it’s dealers during Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. This generous support will help elevate the already superior level of care our young patients receive and will make us one step closer to finding a cure,” said Laura Ilgun, Director of Development for Vannie E. Cook Jr. Children’s Cancer and Hematology Clinic.
“Hyundai is one of our biggest helpers. They are continually helping. We are most grateful for this gift from Hyundai and hope that we can find an answer to why people get cancer and help cure it more efficiently and effectively.”
“We are very happy to be here during Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. We focus on raising awareness of childhood cancer while celebrating the lives of the great children who are battling this disease. Hyundai Hope on Wheels is a joint effort of Hyundai Motor America and its more than 800 dealers that help fight childhood cancer.”
“My son Evan was diagnosed with ALL in December 2010. There’s no easy way to deal with a child being diagnosed with leukemia. There are as many fears as there are questions that fill your mind and your heart. People often ask me ‘Preston, how do you do it?’ I can’t even imagine. My answer, God, and Vannie Cook. Thank you for spreading awareness and thank you for listening,” Said Preston, mother of Evan, a patient at Vannie Cook Children’s Clinic in McAllen, TX.
“Now therefore I, Richard F. Cortez, Mayor of the City of McAllen, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the city, and on behalf of myself and the City Commission, do hereby proclaim September 29, 2011 as Hyundai Hope on Wheels Day. We thank all of you for coming,” said Richard F. Cortez, Mayor of the City of McAllen, TX.
