September was National Histiocytosis Month and Maria Jose Dias Frias sponsored an Empanada Sale to benefit Histiocytosis research at Texas Children’s Cancer Center. Maria sold delicious party packs of hand-made Argentinian empanadas, which encouraged donations to the Histio Heroes Research Fund. The benefit raised $2,600 and 100% of the profits support the research fund, which benefits the Texas Children’s Cancer Center Histiocytosis Program.
Langerhans Cell Histiocytosis (LCH) and Hemophagocytic Lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) are rare blood cell diseases that primarily affects children under the age of 10. The cause is still unknown and due to its rarity (1 in 200,000 people), there is no government funded research to find a cure.
The program, which is the largest of its kind in the world, is directed by Dr. Kenneth McClain. The Histiocytosis Research Laboratory is on the forefront of the search for a cure and new treatments for histiocytosis.
