HOUSTON — Attendees at the Amschwand Sarcoma Cancer Foundation’s 10th annual Catwalk for a Cure, underwritten by Saks Fifth Avenue, were treated to spectacular evening at Hotel Zaza Thursday, November 7th. The fashionable fete chaired by Laura & Mark Dalton and Aynsley & Palmer Letzerich is a favorite for Houston’s most philanthropic and fashion-forward. While partners Saks Fifth Avenue, Elie Tahari and NINI Jewels contributed largely to the evening’s success, it was the honorees who inspired the sold-out crowd of Houston’s most charitable and stylish.
Celebrity designer Elie Tahari (in from New York) did not disappoint, dazzling with his Spring 2014 collection which included special pieces from his capsule “Edition 1974” collection — a nod to his 40 years in the business. “It is experiences like working with the Amschwand Sarcoma Cancer Foundation that truly stand out over my forty years in the industry,” Tahari said as he made the rounds taking photographs with the night’s honorees, presenters and sarcoma survivors who gathered for an evening of special celebration and remembrance.
Amschwand Sarcoma Cancer Foundation co-founder Missy Bellinger presented the Commitment to the Cause award to the Johnny O’Leary Family. Johnny was a patient at both Texas Children’s Cancer Center and MD Anderson Children’s Cancer Center before he lost his battle to cardiac synovial sarcoma in February. Johnny’s mother, Stinelli Castaneda O’Leary, accepted the award on the family’s behalf.
Presenting the inaugural Commitment to Care award to Dr. Rex Marco were his grateful patients Haag Sherman and 12-year old Morgan LaRue. After paying an emotional tribute to his late father (whom Marco credited with teaching him what it felt like to be on the other side of the doctor/cancer patient relationship), the debonair doctor would strut his stuff on the catwalk with encouragement from Mistress of Ceremonies, Deborah Duncan, much to the delight of his sarcoma patients, staff, and colleagues.
The Celebration of Survivorship award was presented to native Houstonian (turned professional golfer) Stuart Hendley by his adoring daughter Kamryn. Hendley celebrates his 30th year of sarcoma survivorship this year.
Attendees from the evening supporting Dr. Rex Marco included: his beautiful wife, Emina Marco, and, patients Haag Sherman, Rhonda Johnson, Bethany Bridgewater and Morgan LaRue (with parents Ashley and Jeremy).Colleagues and staff attending included Dr. Lisa Wang (who assisted in making a special tribute video for Marco which included special images and messages from his patients), Dr. Garth Beinart (with wife Jessica), Dr. Nino Rainusso, Dr. John Labis, Dr. Michael Klebuc (with wife Betty Ann), Dr. Matteo Trucco, Jerry Buchert, Stephanie Holloway, Esmeralda Salinas, Irene Abdo and Shirley Phipps.
Since ASCF’s inception in 2001, the Houston-based non-profit organization (with a national reach) continues to focus on fulfilling its mission of increasing awareness of sarcoma, directly funding sarcoma research and providing tangible support to families affected by the rare cancer that affects thousands of men, women and children each year. ASCF’s physician scientist program provides sarcoma specific funding to researchers around the country, including leading specialists in the Texas Medical Center. Each year, ASCF provides nearly 1,000 nights of free housing to sarcoma patients traveling to Houston for medical treatment, second opinion or follow-up. Through a multitude of channels, ASCF continues to raise awareness of the deadly cancer and the needs of those affected by it.
