The Childhood Cancer Epidemiology and Prevention Center at Texas Children's Cancer Center, is associated with Baylor College of Medicine, one of the top medical schools in the country, and Texas Children's Hospital, the largest pediatric hospital in the United States.
Epidemiology: Who Gets Cancer and Why
Cancer epidemiologists examine the rates of cancer and their relationship with risk factors, such as, which types of cancer occur and which groups of individuals develop the disease. Epidemiology studies may include researching a particular segment of the population, to determine diet, environmental exposure to possible cancer-causing agents or family history of cancer. Researchers use this information to help determine the cause of cancer and to develop strategies to help reduce their cancer risk.
Researchers have made significant advances to improve survival for children with cancer, but more study is needed.
The Childhood Cancer Epidemiology and Prevention Center is a research center, rather than a treatment center. Discoveries resulting from research in the center will be shared with doctors and hospitals. Scientists in this new center will study causes of childhood cancer and what can be done to prevent it. The ultimate goal is to eradicate childhood cancer in Texas, the nation and the world.
The mission of the Childhood Cancer Epidemiology and Prevention Center is to eliminate childhood cancer by improving our understanding of the causes of childhood cancer, advance childhood cancer prevention, establish a multidisciplinary research program, and provide professional and public education.
