Graduate Nurse Practitioner Program: Hematology-Oncology and Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation Training & Fellowship
Texas Children's Cancer and Hematology Centers offer a post-Master's nurse practitioner (Pediatric Nurse Practitioner or Family Nurse Practitioner) fellowship & training program for those interested in the care of children and adolescents with cancer, hematologic disorders, and/or stem cell transplantation. Clinical tracts within oncology, hematology and stem cell transplantation allow graduates / nurse practitioners to obtain a comprehensive overview and/or obtain focused training in an area of special interest.
The three-month clinical fellowship provides a comprehensive educational pediatric-focused nurse practitioner program coupled with clinical opportunities designed to provide the nurse practitioner fellow with in-depth knowledge of the diagnosis and management of pediatric hematologic and oncologic disorders, and hematopoietic stem cell transplantation.
Two nurse practitioner fellows will be accepted into the nurse practitioner program for June - September of each year. Nurse practitioner fellows will receive a $9,000 ($3,000/month) scholarship to cover expenses during the program.
The Graduate Nurse Practitioner Program is not being held this summer (2013). The fellowship will resume in Summer 2014.
Educational Objectives
- Acquire knowledge of the treatment and management of pediatric oncology and hematology diagnoses
- Strengthen physical assessment skills essential for the care of pediatric and adolescent oncology, hematology and stem cell transplant patients
- Develop baseline understanding of potential complications related to the diagnosis and treatment of childhood cancers, blood disorders, or stem cell transplantation
- Develop skills in performing invasive procedures
- Provide opportunities to explore the nurse practitioner professional role
- Experience the collaborative role among MDs and NPs in the Cancer Center
- Integrate a knowledge base necessary to educate patients and families
Educational Experiences
Clinical experiences for the nurse practitioner fellow include rotations on the leukemia, lymphoma, solid tumor, neuro-oncology, late effects, hematology, the inpatient general hematology/oncology unit, and hematopoietic stem cell transplant unit. Nurse practitioner fellows also obtain hematology laboratory experiences. Nurse practitioner fellows will be actively involved in patient assessment, teaching, management and follow-up.
In addition, nurse practitioner fellows will attend tumor board, grand rounds, nursing rounds, nurse practitioner meetings and clinical pathology conferences and will participate in a weekly seminar/lecture series. Psychosocial issues are addressed throughout the fellowship rotations. Nurse Practitioner Fellows will begin in July in order to attend the summer MD Fellow Lecture Series.
Faculty Supervision & Education
Nurse practitioner fellows will be precepted by certified pediatric oncology nurse practitioners, family oncology nurse practitioners or clinical faculty of Baylor College of Medicine. Pediatric oncology nurse practitioners are directly responsible for the care of children with cancer at Texas Children's Hospital. Pediatric oncologists are also involved in the clinical supervision and educational preparation of nurse practitioner fellows.

Eligibility
Applicants must have at least one year experience in pediatric oncology nursing, have completed a Master’s degree in nursing and be eligible for national Pediatric Nurse Practitioner Certification or Family Nurse Practitioner Certification.
Texas RN licensure from the Texas Board of Nursing and certificate of graduation from a Masters in Nursing program is required prior to starting the fellowship.
