About the Cancer Genetics Clinic
The Cancer Genetics Clinic offers DNA diagnostic studies, screening tests and counseling services to families at risk of childhood cancer. Led by internationally recognized geneticists working closely with genetic counselors, we provide comprehensive analysis, physical exams, risk assessments, counseling, and risk minimization strategies and recommendations for future screenings regarding cancer.
Collaborating with departments across the hospital, the cancer genetics team provides the highest level of analysis and care to our patients and their families. Evaluation results are shared directly with the patient’s physicians to best help guide ongoing care and management. Decisions about genetic testing for cancer susceptibility genes, when indicated, are made only after discussions with families.
The Cancer Genetics Clinic is dedicated to giving patients the psychological support and counseling that they need to cope or prepare for a cancer diagnosis. A full range of services and/or referrals are available, providing comprehensive psychological support and counseling as well as the most current medical information and treatment. The Cancer Genetics Clinic also provides molecular diagnostic testing for children with a significant family history of cancer.
The Baylor Cancer Genetics Clinic saw over 120 new patients last year and is held weekly. The clinic is staffed by a principal investigator, a genetic counselor, and a data manager. In collaboration with Baylor College of Medicine, the clinic also serves as a training site for both Medical Genetics and Pediatric Hematology-Oncology residents.
Our Cancer Genetics Clinic participates in most national clinical trials and has recently received sizeable grants from Cancer Prevention Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to examine how we can use genome-scale sequencing in the care of childhood cancer patients to offer better treatments. Our program also includes research groups who study the basic science behind cancer development, constantly advancing cancer knowledge. Learn more about the Cancer Genetics and Genomics Program
We pride ourselves in partnering closely with referring physicians and families throughout the process to ensure they are fully informed about their patient’s care.
